Power source solutions: tips to avoid box mod battery issues

Are you a member of the custom vape community; that is, the part of the wider vaping community that enjoys nothing more than to customise their vaping experience? If so, chances are your e-cig device of choice is a box mod – and chances are it’s your pride and joy. Why? Well, not only can you load any tank you like into a custom box mod, you can also set the thing up (for instance, via temperature settings) to optimise the specific coils you like to use and the e-juice you like to vape.

That said, there is a downside to box mods, unfortunately. They have a habit of going through batteries like no tomorrow – and far from all of them are capable of being recharged via a handy USB cable. That means complications when sorting out the batteries you use. So, are there any hacks you can try so you get around battery issues you’ll encounter using your prized box mod…?

Rotate three sets of batteries

First up, a great idea is to try and ensure you have a trio of battery sets in rotation at all times. How would this work? Well, your first set would be in the box mod, powering the thing to ensure you enjoy your delicious vape juice. The second set then, fully-charged (don’t forget!), would go in your vape accessories UK bag that you carry with you when you’re out and about during the day, so when the first set run out of ‘juice’, you can change them over with the second set, ensuring you only lose a few seconds of vaping time.

Finally then, the third set would belong in your charger at home, so when you get home you’ll have a fully-charged set to replace the second set, which in turn, of course, replaced the first set during the day. Simple. Another top tip is to colour-code your different battery sets (with small strips of tape, ideally); that way you won’t mix up your batteries and will always know which battery belongs with which set.

Buy flat-top batteries

This may sound like a bit of a pernickety slice of advice, but trying to buy batteries with flat-tops rather than the traditional ones with nubs on the end of the ‘positive’ side could save you many an irritating moment – when the latter unexpectedly leap out of spring-loaded battery compartments in your box mod. But how can you quickly tell which end is the ‘positive’ end on a flat-top battery without the nub? Well, it will of course still be marked with a ‘+’ symbol and there’ll be a circular groove where the nub would otherwise be.

Optimise power settings for best performance

Finally, to ensure your box mod consumes battery power as effectively as possible, you’ll want to optimise its power settings. This means starting with the wick and coil; there’ll be specs on the coil indicating the best voltage at which operates – if the voltage is too high, the cotton’ll be burnt ensuring a far from pleasant taste (and a waste of both battery power and valuable e-juice); if it’s too low, you’ll end up sacrificing e juice flavour and potential cloud generation. So, by tweaking your flexible box mod’s power settings you should be able to reach a happy medium where you use a reasonable amount of battery power and enjoy your vaping just as you want.
