Mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung: which vaping technique’s best?

When you get going with vaping, there does seem to be a lot to get your head around, it has to be said. After all, when you’re done figuring out what kind of e-liquid (and its ingredient mixes you should plump for) and the type of e-cig device and accompanying equipment you should buy you’re then faced with different kinds of vaping techniques to deploy. Sun-ohming; mouth-to-lung vaping; direct-to-lung vaping; which on earth should you use, especially when you start out?

Well, if you’re bemused and befuddled when it comes to vaping techniques, then you really ought to read on; it should clear up all your questions and leave you ready to vape just how you need to according to the vaping experience you want…

Mouth-to-lung inhale

This inhalation technique (MTL, for short) refers to when vapour is allowed to collect in the mouth and held there for a few seconds before, being fully inhaled, by slowly slipping down into the lungs. To perform MTL correctly then you should aim for a smooth, steady drag into your mouth; longer than you’d hold it than for smoking a conventional cigarette because you’re going to be wittingly holding the vapour in your mouth before releasing it into your lungs.

Direct-to-lung inhale

Conversely then, this technique (DTL, for short) requires the full inhalation of vapour all in one go; that’s to say, the vapour is inhaled straight down into the lungs without a pause of being held in the mouth. In essence, it’s like taking a deep breath yet you need to purse your lips at the same time. You’ll likely also find it referred to as straight-to-lung inhale (STL) as well. To get DTL right, you’ll first want to adjust your device’s airflow; opening it up fully is probably the best idea here as it’ll ensure as airy a vape as possible. Following this it’s simply about taking a long and steady, smooth drag that you pull straight down into your lungs, like taking a long, languorous breath.

An in-between inhalation?

Fair dos, you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere on the Internet talking about an inhalation technique that could be said to lie between MTL and DTL (like it or not, the Internet doesn’t tend to do nuance and grey areas as well as it might), but there definitely is a halfway-house, a point at which the two techniques blur. The fact is, of course, however you inhale and whatever technique you deploy for vaping, the vapour has to pass through your mouth on its way to the lungs; so, it’s certainly possible to half-MTL vape or half-DTL, whichever way you want to look at it.

Which technique’s better for rookie vapers?

For those new to the world of vaping then mouth-to-lung rather than direct-to-lung is probably better. Why? For the simple reason that it enables the vaper to make the most of a relatively standard and simple e-cig device’s ability to deliver tight, high nicotine levels and, thus, a satisfying throat hit – an experience that’s similar to the one that would-be-ex-smokers would doubtless want to pursue when they start out vaping as it’s the experience they’ll get from an e-cig that’ll most resemble that they got from smoking. Alternatively, they may find direct-to-lung vaping a little intense and a little too alien, at least to begin with.

Which is better for flavour?

Flavour-wise, MTL is likely to better as well, new vapers will doubtless discover; as many experienced in their e-cig use claim the mouth-to-lung technique is bets for delivering the best among (i.e. as much as possible) flavour from a vape hit. Why exactly is this so? Well, opinions vary but one goes that it ensures less air joins in with the vapour, thus there’s no obscuring or diluting of the taste at all, via this technique, while another has it that because the vapour is allowed to collect in the mouth it passes over more taste buds that it obviously would were the direct-to-lung technique deployed instead this one alongside a mouth to lung vape kit.

Which is better for generating clouds of vapour?

Undoubtedly, your best bet here is DTL. It’s ideal for those who want to create great big plums of vapour or for those who are after a heavily intense experience from their vape; for instance, if you fancy yourself a cloud chaser, then DTL’s the inhalation technique for you.
